Understanding Dividend Yield

Dividend yield is the annual dividend payment divided by the current stock price, expressed as a percentage. A stock trading at $100 that pays $4 per year in dividends has a 4% yield. It tells you how much income you earn relative to what you paid.

Yield moves inversely with price. If the stock drops to $80 and the dividend stays at $4, the yield rises to 5%. If the stock rises to $120, yield drops to 3.3%. This is why a high yield is not always good news — it can signal that the market expects the dividend to be cut.

What Is a Good Dividend Yield?

For most dividend investors, 2.5-5% is the sweet spot. Below 2% and the income contribution is minimal. Above 6% and the sustainability risk increases — companies paying out that much of their earnings may not be able to maintain it. The S&P 500 averages roughly 1.3-1.5% yield, while the Dividend Aristocrats average 2.5-3%.

What is a good dividend yield?

Most dividend investors target 2.5-5%. The S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats average roughly 2.5-3% with proven track records of 25+ consecutive years of dividend increases.

How is dividend yield calculated?

Annual dividend per share divided by current share price, times 100. A $100 stock paying $4/year = 4% yield.
